Walmart Launches AI Agent Tools to Shop for Customers, Introducing a New Era of E-Commerce

Walmart is opening its shopping platform to AI agents, allowing artificial intelligence assistants to search for products and make purchases on behalf of customers under controlled permissions. Announced on October 21, 2026, the initiative introduces new tools designed to make AI-powered shopping more convenient while keeping customers in control of their spending and personal information.

Walmart Introduces Agent Profiles and Agent Gateway

The retailer is introducing two key features: Agent Profiles and the Walmart Agent Gateway.

Agent Profiles, expected to roll out in November 2026, will allow customers to authorize individual AI agents through dedicated profiles connected to their Walmart accounts. Customers will be able to track agent purchases separately, establish spending limits, and require approval for each transaction. They will also have the option to revoke an agent’s access.

The Walmart Agent Gateway is designed to help AI agents connect directly with Walmart and Sam’s Club systems. The company says this approach can make product searches and purchasing workflows faster and more reliable than relying on agents to navigate websites built primarily for human users. A beta version is being introduced for companies and developers.

AI Assistants Could Handle Everyday Shopping Tasks

The new capabilities could make routine shopping easier for consumers. Instead of manually searching through product listings, customers may be able to instruct an AI assistant to find groceries, compare household essentials, or select products within a specified budget.

The gateway is intended to support integrations with AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Meta’s Muse. The aim is to connect conversational AI experiences with Walmart’s product selection and shopping services.

Walmart also says agents could help customers locate their usual products without receiving access to their entire shopping history. For example, an agent could identify a customer’s preferred milk brand without needing to view unrelated purchases.

Customer Control and Privacy Remain Central

Giving AI systems the ability to make purchases raises questions about payment security, privacy, and unauthorized transactions. Walmart says its new framework includes safeguards to address these concerns.

Customers will be able to set spending limits and control purchase approvals. AI agents will not receive customers’ payment-card details or be permitted to add or change payment methods. They must also follow the customer’s instructions and access only the information necessary for an authorized task.

Walmart has stated that agents violating its rules may be blocked from the platform. The company also says its standard returns process will continue to apply when purchases are made through an agent.

The tools are intended to be available to Walmart account holders without requiring a Walmart+ membership.

Walmart’s AI Strategy and the Changing Retail Landscape

Walmart’s latest announcement reflects a broader transformation in online commerce, as retailers explore ways to integrate AI into product discovery, recommendations, and checkout.

The strategy also contrasts with Amazon’s approach to certain third-party AI shopping agents, whose access to its platform has been restricted. Walmart is instead developing a framework that allows external AI tools to interact with its retail systems under defined conditions.

The shift could create new opportunities for retailers to reach customers through conversational interfaces rather than relying exclusively on traditional websites and mobile applications.

What This Means for the Future of Online Shopping

AI-powered shopping agents could eventually help consumers manage recurring purchases, discover relevant products, compare alternatives, and complete routine transactions with fewer manual steps.

However, the success of agent-led commerce will depend on customer trust, reliable recommendations, transparent pricing, secure payment processes, and clear accountability when an automated system makes a mistake.

For retailers, the challenge will be to balance convenience with consumer protection while adapting their technology to a new generation of AI-driven shopping experiences.

Walmart’s Agent Profiles and Agent Gateway represent a significant step toward this model. As the technology develops, the way people discover and purchase products online could become increasingly conversational, personalized, and automated.
